My Study in ETM

Every student who applies for Environmental Technology and Management (ETM) is willing to be an environmental scientist working in an international company. So, what we learn should meet the needs of our future career. Then you may ask, what our career asks for? The answer is simple: The companies not only ask for technical knowledge but also our capabilities and characteristics, such as independence, teamwork, expression, cooperation, time concept...

If a school can offer not only the knowledge, but also the competences training, it will be a wise choice.

As an ETM student in Hogeschool Brabant, on the first day of study here, I got a clear concept about our program and what to do in the next two years.

Compare the education in China, I find our program has two main advantages.

The first is that, the study here is more active and independent. Our teachers first give us the principles and introductory, then we search information on internet and in libraries. Normally, the teachers only tell you how to learn in stead of giving you the products directly. We do not go very deep in fundamental knowledge, but a very wide range. Because as an environmental scientist, we should be very familiar with every compartment and aspect of our environment. Meanwhile, as a manager, the background should be adequate to deal with the project and to organize the work in group. So, the staffs of ETM design a very efficient way to learn, we combine self study, case study and excursion together.

The second is that, we have much more teamwork than in China. In my point of view, teamwork is the best way to train the following competences: management, presentation, organization, pressure resistance... In teamwork, we, learn how to plan the time schedule, how to organize a meeting, how to enlighten each other and how to have a good interpersonal relationship. Teamwork always gives us more ideas and better products. That is why people always say, one plus one is more than two.

To conclude, the study here not only focuses on personal understanding but also on interpersonal cooperation; not only on knowledge in books, but also on competences training. Every aspect of our study relates each other and helps each other.

Thus, I hope the students who are interested in our program could be more resolute after my introduction.Hope to see you in Hogeschool Brabant next September!
